BURNED OUT is an interactive sculptural installation created with the support of the Sustainable Campus Initiative Fund (SCIF) of the University of Utah.

The project was conceived to bring awareness to carbon dioxide emissions produced by the power plants which generate electricity by burning fossil fuels. Viewers are encouraged to interact with the piece by spinning the 3D printed gears attached to the sculpture, which will cause a small motor to generate electricity and light up specific parts of the installation. Four separate motors must be spun by different viewers in order to light up at the same time. The lights serve as both a warning of non-renewable consumption of electricity, as well as a beacon of hope, in the search for a solution that can only be achieved when the collective works together.
